My first update this year. I will begin updating this site with news again very soon. John Schappert, Corporate Vice President of Xbox LIVE, Services and Software, announced today during his Tokyo Game Show keynote that the New Xbox Experience will ship to Xbox 360's around the world (in 26 countries, localized in 11 languages) on November 19th 2008.

How do I get it?

You don’t have to do anything, really. The update will download just like a normal system update would. You will see a status bar letting you know how long it will take, and you won’t be able to use the console during this time. Once the update finishes the console will reload into the welcome page, and you will be able to begin exploring the new features and experiences on Xbox 360.

Due to the fact that things are quiet at the moment I haven't added much news, but check back here regularly as I will have news when things start to heat up within the next few weeks.

Today Ubisoft announced that Prince of Persia will ship December 2, 2008 for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and PC. Prince of Persia: The Fallen King will also ship simultaneously and exclusively for the Nintendo DS(TM) system.

Prince of Persia opens an entirely new chapter in the Prince of Persia universe in addition to introducing a fresh Illustrative art style, evolved combat system, open world structure and dynamic AI – most notably in the form of the Prince's powerful ally Elika.

Take a leap of ‘Faith’ this November! DICE, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced that the highly acclaimed first-person action adventure title, Mirror’s Edge™ will ship on November 11th for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system. The PC version of Mirror’s Edge will ship later in the winter. Prior to launch, players worldwide will get an early peek at the game when the demo* becomes available via Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace and PLAYSTATION® Store. The demo will feature the prologue of the game including the tutorial and a segment of the single-player story mode. Starting September 26th, players who pre-order Mirror’s Edge at selected retailers will get an exclusive code that unlocks the Time Trial mode in the demo.

Time Trial mode challenges players to find the fastest route across the rooftops and through the streets. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.

“Mirror’s Edge is bringing something new to the action-adventure genre this holiday by putting the player in the shoes of the hero, seeing what she sees, feeling what she feels,” says Owen O’Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. “We wanted to create an entirely new experience, with a different type of heroine and a world that not only looks fresh and new but has unique gameplay.”

Mirror’s Edge was recently awarded “Best Xbox 360 Game” at the recent GC Developers Conference in Leipzig, Germany. It also received the “Best Action Game” of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) by IGN and the Game Critics Award for “Best Original Game” at E3 in July. Mirror’s Edge delivers players straight into the shoes of Faith, a modern day heroine who traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat, fast-paced chases and challenging puzzles. With a never-before-seen sense of movement and perspective, players are drawn into Faith’s dangerous world.

Gabe Newell, managing director and co-founder of Valve, told VideoGamer.com at the Leipzig Games Convention that they will release a Xbox 360 and PC demo of Left 4 Dead.

"We will be releasing demos for both the Xbox and for the PC. I don't know what the date is for release on that, though. I think it's going to contain the first part of one of the campaigns. I think it'll probably be Hospital but I'm not sure. That's a decision that Doug Lombardi is making." Newell confirmed that you'll be able to play single-player and co-op in the demo.

Gamers find your Kevlar, because this weekend the bullets will fly as Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare™ Variety Map Pack hits half-price on the Xbox LIVE® online entertainment network for a limited time. Starting Sept. 12 (12:01 am/PDT) and running through midnight on Sept. 14, Activision Inc.’s (Nasdaq: ATVI) blockbuster DLC by Infinity Ward will be available for 400 Microsoft Points. LucasArts announced today that they will release the official demo of their upcoming action game Fracture on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network on Thursday, September 18. The demo will introduce players to the revolutionary gameplay behind Terrain Deformation, a key gameplay mechanic that allows for the dynamic creation of on-the-fly cover and geographic manipulation.

Developed in partnership with Chicago-based Day 1 Studios, Fracture takes place in the year 2161 in a United States plagued by disaster. Years of environmental neglect have split the nation in two and resulted in two conflicting ways of life. Survivors of the Atlantic Alliance have turned to cybernetics and technology, while the Pacifican States in the West have turned to stem cell research and genetic engineering for a better way of life. These two conflicting ideologies come to a head in a deadly civil war for not only the fate of the free world, but also the future of mankind itself.

In the demo, utilize the power of Terrain Deformation to create cover, solve puzzles and revolutionize battlefield tactics as you guide Atlantic Alliance soldier Jet Brody in his quest to quell the Pacifican uprising through an exciting single player campaign that begins in the now-dried-out San Francisco bay, and traverses the ravaged country.

When the game ships to retail you will also be able to test your mettle in over-the-top multiplayer modes where nonstop action meet Terrain Deformation for brutal 12-player battles in modes specifically built for Fracture and TD technology.

Fracture releases for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 7, 2008 in North America and on October 10, 2008 in Europe.

Luke Smith over at Bungie lays out some of the new achievements coming to Halo 3 when the next patch and Assembly map hits. Smith points out that the included list of achievements aren't all of the new ones coming with Title Update 2. As folks have seen, these aren’t the only achievements we’re adding. But without proper context, there’s not a whole lot else we’re going to say. Stay tuned.

The update may slip as well, Smith points out, to closer to the Halo 3 one year anniversary. Now for those achievements which can be earned via the Legendary Maps and Halo 3 Campaign:

Xbox today announces a unique initiative that will enable entertainment fans to see some of the most anticipated new movies before their theatrical release.

The “Xbox LIVE Film Club” will be delivering a number of sneak preview screenings to a select group of Xbox fans in an exclusive setting, giving them the chance to see brand new movie titles before anyone else.

Fresh from its GC Leipzig introduction, Codemasters released the first pre-alpha screenshots from FUEL, the forthcoming title from Asobo Studios that's set to deliver the largest environment ever created in multi-terrain race gaming

Coming in 2009, FUEL will present players with an astonishing no-boundaries playfield that’s over 5,000 square miles (14,000+ km²) in size. Boot camp will soon take on a new meaning, as Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and developer Treyarch, have confirmed plans for Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer betas in October for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and separately for download on Windows PC. These betas will serve as an early chance for players to practice the tactics needed for survival in the intense chaos of Call of Duty: World at War’s Pacific and European theaters. Players will experience the game’s new squad system, as well as fan favorite perks and kill streaks.

All preparation for the full battle will commence on November 11, 2008 when Call of Duty: World at War is released to retailers nationwide.

NoKnownSurvivors.com is an experiential site that allows visitors to explore the narrative world of Dead Space. Over nine weeks, the site employs interactive components, 3D animations, voice acting, original video and animation, as well as Papervision 3D technology to tell two equally tragic four chapter stories. The First, "Misplaced Affection", is the story of an organ replacement technician who falls hard for a capable female security officer. Kicking off the countdown to the game's release this fall, Ubisoft announced today that a pre-launch VIP demo of Tom Clancy's EndWar(TM) for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft will be made available to consumers prior to the game's release. Tom Clancy's EndWar was recently named the Best Strategy Game of E3 2008 by Game Critics Awards, the first time ever a console game has received this award.

"We believe EndWar will revolutionize the strategy genre on consoles and are thrilled gamers will be able to get a little taste of why we are so excited about EndWar's release this holiday season,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. The Xbox 360 VIP demo of Tom Clancy's EndWar will begin in early October.

Ubisoft and GeoEye, Inc. announced that GeoEye, a premier provider of satellite, aerial and geospatial information, has provided high-resolution images taken from its commercial Earth-imaging IKONOS satellite for integration into Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X video game.

The H.A.W.X development team is working closely with specialists at GeoEye to integrate realistic satellite images for every location throughout the game.

LucasArts has released a playable demo of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. An entirely new chapter in the Star Wars Saga, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice" and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The game's expansive story is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist Vader in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

The demo (905 MB) gives players a taste of one of the early levels in the game: the TIE Fighter Construction Facility, under siege by a Jedi general named Rahm Kota. Also included in the demo is a tutorial intended to teach players how to use their Force Grip power.

While dedicated hockey fans eagerly anticipate the first puck to drop for the start of this year’s NHL season, 2K Sports today announced that a free demo of NHL 2K9 is now available for download on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. The demo will provide fans an early chance to experience the new simplified controls and relive the excitement of this past season’s thrilling Stanley Cup™ Final for a brief three minute period as either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

No sooner have we hated on the 360 pad's useless d-pad for the 1,165th time than we hear that a new 360 control pad is on the showroom floor at Leipzig. Microsoft, your sense of timing is impeccable. While the pad looks identical to the existing one, the d-pad is apparently much-improved, as it can now register movement in 32 directions, as opposed to the existing one's...4. That's the good news. The bad news? Well, the bad news is comical. Microsoft told Eurogamer the improved controller will only be available for a limited time, as it's a tie-in with Pro Evo 2009. And not just that, they say it'll only be available in Europe, Asia and Latin America. It'll be out on October 24, so if you want (or want to import one) one, get in early.

 

 

 

At the Leipzig Games Convention, Microsoft announced the first episodes of GTA IV will be available for download exclusively on Xbox LIVE.

 

So, what do we know? Well, it's nice to get confirmation that it will be several such episodes -- whether that means actual episodic gameplay in a Half Life 2 style, who can say?. Mention of Liberty City seems to throw cold water on those 'whole new city' rumors, which is a shame, but still - GTA IV DLC! Yay!

 

 

Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, announced today that its highly anticipated title, Fallout® 3, will be available on store shelves and online in North America on October 28, 2008 and in Europe on October 31, 2008.
